What's the job?

As a Product Designer working on interface design, your number one job is to solve user problems along their entire user journey. Our design team's work is critical: we support Open Social users on over 1.000 different community platforms. You will work closely with our product manager, engineers, marketing and sales, and UX researcher to iterate, build, and launch usable, useful and delightful user experiences. You'll engage across all stages of a project, using your skills in concepting, prototyping, UX research, information design and spec delivery. Your work may touch completely new add-ons for Open Social, such as Chat interfaces, Layout Builders and core product features such as Profile, Group and Timeline (Stream) features.

As a Product Designer, you will be one of the key members in the development of our software. You will be working on improving the current software and bringing new exciting features to life. You will help clarify the business objectives of each assignment, discover the missing information, explore the best solutions, and then facilitate the process to make it happen.

As we are a startup, you will collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines such as design, development and even marketing and sales. Our team is diverse with different cultural backgrounds. Open Social empowers people by providing an open-source platform to build online communities of like-minded individuals. Replacing tools such as Facebook, Open Social fuels bottom-up innovation within organizations.

Early versions of our offering have won the prestigious Dutch Interactive Awards. The project, Greenpeace Greenwire, helps more than 100 000 Greenpeace volunteers bring positive change to the world around the globe. In The Netherlands alone, the software increased volunteering by 600%.

We offer our software in different versions: a free open-source distribution, a fully maintained software-as-a-service, and an enterprise edition. It's built with open-source tech such as Drupal, React & GraphQL for creating ambitious digital experiences and has more than 100.000 active contributors worldwide. 

The project is developed by a team of +30 people in The Netherlands and remote across Europe. Our offices are based in Enschede and Amsterdam.

Your responsibilities

  • Deeply understand the needs of Open Social’s users across our entire ecosystem
  • Empathize, shadow, and understand the needs of community and site managers charged with managing their communities
  • Own design problems in end to end details, from initial concept through to shipping and beyond
  • Build wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs based on our UI framework to tackle difficult UX problems
  • Work with product managers to define requirements, not just translate them to design
  • Identify future opportunities, working as a key thought partner to your counterparts in product, engineering, and sales/marketing
  • Partner with our UX researcher to better understand the needs of our customers
  • Collaborate and iterate with your design colleagues to help raise the bar on the end to end Open Social experience
  • Partner closely with engineers to understand technology capabilities, build your outstanding designs, and achieve a high quality shipped product
  • Ship, measure, and improve your designs based on quantitative and qualitative feedback
  • Translate functionalities between different platforms (web and mobile) to utilise each platform's strengths while providing a consistent experience and help us identify other ways to interact with Open Social (e.g. voice, shared screens in common areas/virtual meetings, hand-off between platforms, etc).


The experience you bring to the team

Required qualifications:

  • 5+ years established experience as a Product Designer

  • A portfolio showing your high quality, thoughtful UX work
  • You speak English and have good communication skills
  • Based in European/African time zones
  • Trackrecord of leadership roles.

And you get bonus points when you have experience with/in (nice-to-haves)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to tackle complex user and design problems

  • Effective prototyping skills
  • Deep knowledge of building products for mobile and desktop applications
  • A track record of shipping phenomenal experiences, weathering release cycles, and knowing what details matter at each stage
  • An owner's attitude. You don't hesitate to schedule impromptu calls with customer obsession teammates across the globe to understand how they use tools; you empower engineers to get the fit and finish right; you translate insights from user studies into meaningful action
  • Proficiency with the latest tools to build design and a strong desire to learn new ones. Figma expertise encouraged.
  • Fast paced with the ability to prioritize projects concurrently
  • Expertise at developing and conveying ideas clearly in written and visual format - making business concepts and data visually engaging
  • Emotional intelligence. You authentically care about your teammates and nurture positive relationships even through difficult projects.
  • Community, CRM or Social software experience ideal
